Everyday lookism
The everydaylookism campaign aims to reduce appearance discrimination and body shaming, by naming lookism, and saying its not ok. In the campaign people share their experiences of body shaming, to show how hurtful and harming lookist comments are. It’s never ok to make negative comments about other people’s bodies. It doesn’t matter what your relationship is, or your intention.
Its not so long ago that sexist or racist comments were seen as ‘normal’, lets do the same with lookist comments. Lets shift the shame from the ‘victim’ to the ‘perpetrator’, just as we’ve done with sexist and racist comments. Share your story with us. Each is a drop in the ocean, but together they are a tidal wave. Let’s change our culture together.
The everydaylookism campaign builds on the work of Professor Heather Widdows, who argues we need collective not individual responses to the rising demands of beauty and the epidemic of body image anxiety.
